treats in the mail

Were we supposed to have had a weekend? Because if we did, I missed it. I barely sit down and its Monday again. Oh joy. I've got errands and sanding to do today for I've made myself quite the ambitious schedule for the week. I find I'm my most nieve on Monday mornings, might as well set my sights high.

I do though want to share the highlight of my weekend. Look at the pretty package I received on Saturday.

It is the canvas I won on Kat's fab blog from the uber talented Liz at Birdaria. It is even bigger and better than I expected, and my expectations were high! I will be pinning more this week for sure as it is never too early to start my Christmas list. (are you listening Luke?)

So thank you again to Liz and to Kat for the wonderful gift. I've got big plans for it!

To a successful Monday!

guest post - Tiffany Leigh

Happy Friday all! Whoop Whoop! I'm wrapping up guest post week with a trip over to the lovely Tiffany Leigh for Favorite Furniture Friday.

Any guesses what my favorite piece of furniture is? Hmmm.

guest post - My Crafty Home Life

I'm back from vacation and trying to come out from under the pile of laundry that has taken over my house. But I do have a treat for you - I'm guest posting today over at my dear friend Linda's.

I'm talking about some of my favorite DIY projects. Check it out! And make sure to visit her next Wednesday as well to see everyone's big reveal for the One Room Challenge!

Wish me luck on tackling this pile by the end of the day!

I'm still on vacation but that doesn't stop me from doing a little seek and find over on My Best Friend Craig. Check it out and have a great Monday!

leaving on a jet plane

Actually, I'm just going in an Acura, but you get the idea. I'm off to have some fun with the family up north (and reunite with my old pal IKEA).

Have a wonderful weekend!

the crowd is turning

I have a very demanding audience. And they are getting antsy.

They are 4 and 1.

We started out the summer with a bang doing a million fun things; zoo, pool, playdates, museums, camps, trips. But we've started to loose our fizzle.

We went from dancing in the streets.

To doing this.

They are starting to turn on me.

So this week I'm pulling out every Pinterest trick to get back to this.

How do you deal with the summer slump? How many trips to Target and Michael's can you make in a week? Have you heard of any summer camps for moms? I would be happy to be sent away for a week.

keep your feet on the ground, and keep reachin' for the stars

Oh Casey Kasem. You were the Confucius of our time. Now we are stuck with Ryan Seacrest. But this is a (worthy) discussion for another time.

Today I'm talking gold. I'm loving it. I need it. Since finishing my glitter vase for the Pinterest Challenge, I've been looking for something else to dip in gold and it didn't take me long to find my next victim subject.

You all might remember these little honeys I picked up at an estate sale several months back.
The stars, my favorite detail of the tables, were just screaming for some gold.
I've had the tables in my living room for several weeks now, on approval from the basement, trying out the current finish. And although it wasn't bad, it wasn't working for me.

So the first step was to take the table out and gave it several light and even coats of my trusty black Rust-oleum Painter's Touch Ultra Cover spray paint.
The table after her first coat of black

After 4 coats of black and a day of sunbathing to dry, my stars were ready for their closeup.
I got a Krylon Gold Leaf Pen at Michael's and went to town. I love this pen. It is like a marker for grown ups. I put a napkin under the star to protect the rest of the table and then just sat down and colored. (That star spins, I know pretty cool, so I would just paint the part of the star that was on the napkin, spin and repeat.) And it dries super fast so I was able to do several coats rather quickly.
Just the pop I was looking for. You can see these suckers from across the room. Not in a bad 'what the hell are those' way though, more in a 'who is that hot man across the room' way. The gold would have never stood out as well on the mahogany-ish finish.
Looking good Mr. Carter. But it wasn't enough to give me my fix, I needed more than just the four stars. Speaking of, have you ever tried to take a picture that shows all four ends of a rectangle? Don't bother, it can't be done.
So to up the gold factor, I 'dipped' the legs. Obviously they aren't technically dipped as I can't fit those thick legs into a tiny little pen, but you get the idea.
Yes, my floors need to be refinished but that will have to happen another year. Look at the legs instead. They are pretty. They are gold. Oohhh. Ahhhh.
I love it. So much so that I know move the table all ove the house, changing it up each time. Good thing I have another one in the basement.
And a quick public service announcement about the glitter used earlier in the week - make sure you store all glitter in a locked cabinet, just like your liquor, or your children will get a hold of it and 'dust' the table with it.

One dipped table completed, one more to go.

Have you tried the Gold Leaf pen? Found yourself slapping a new to you color on anything that will stand still? Don't be surprised if my girls have been painted gold by the end of the summer.

pinterest challenge - dipped in gold

I made a promise to myself the last time I saw the Pinterest Challenge, that the next time it came around I would join in the fun.

So when Katie, Sherry, Kate and Michelle told me it was that time of year I did a little happy jig. But my dancing stopped when the hubs pointed out that I was "already in the middle of 4 other big projects. Do you really want to add another one?"

Must he always be so practical?

I did see his point though. But hey, not everything on Pinterest needs to be big. So I decided I'd do something that I could tackle during craft time with my daughter.

Resume happy jig.

The goal, for me, was to pick something very different. Something that made me say 'I love it' and 'that is nothing like anything I have in my house'.

So when I saw this fab mason jar turned disco vase by The Knotty Bride I knew I'd found my project.  And how thrilled would my 4-year-old, Amelia, be to help me with glue and glitter?! Mom of the Month club, are you reading this?

The tutorial is simple and straightforward, perfect for the likes of me.

I got my supplies and used a leftover glass vase from Eve's birthday party as my test subject.

Everything went swimmingly until the glue brush broke and fell onto the table and then into my lap, slopping glue all over everything. This would never happen to a serial craft person I'm sure. You are lucky I love you Martha, otherwise I would have thrown some of my cussing in your direction.

With glue all over the jar, the table and myself, we got to the fun part, the glitter. I used the left over cake box from my birthday to contain the glitterness.

We rolled and rolled until we got this.

It worked! And it was fun and messy and quick. Amelia quickly claimed it as 'hers' so I decided to do another using my very favorite bottle.

I save these bottles from a bar that the hubs and I always visit on date night. They make a blissful G&T. And the bottles are a perfect shape for a single flower. Win win.

Lather. Rinse. Repeat. And I have a lovely glitter tonic bottle.

A perfect way to honor my favorite drink and event - date night.

When we finished Amelia said "oh mommy - they are the most pretty gold dancing balls!". (I think she means disco ball. Don't even get me started on how proud I am that she knows what a disco ball is.)

It was a fun afternoon. And I now have something funky and different from anything else in my house. It also brings out the gold in Mary Katherine Gallagher the Owl . I love it.

And how can you argue with the sparkle it gives when the sun catches it.

Disco.

Thanks ladies, for encouraging me to get my craft on!

you spin me right round

Thanks again everyone for the birthday wishes! It was a great 2 days (I always count the 4th as my birthday as well). My day started with these

and kept getting better from there. This was 'the year of the table', as I got not 1 or 2 but 3 tables for my birthday this year. (Don't let my mom and I loose on the retail world). More on those tables another day but today I have a different table in mind. Or lack of a table rather.

I'm narrowing in on a complete living room plan but one thing that is missing is a coffee table. Coffee tables are a touchy subject in this house as that is the only piece of furniture that has a 'the one that got a way' story. It is too sad to mention but just know that it had an antique round marble top and the most awesome and unique base...see I can't even talk about it. I'll cry. Anyway, moving on.

We need a coffee table. A round coffee table.

We could go with something in honor of 'the table that cannot be named'.

But I'm afraid it will always be compared to the one we wanted and will therefore never feel right.

We could go in a completely different direction and go for lucite.

Very different for me but would certainly keep the space feeling open.

Or, we can go for round fluffy goodness. No, not Kim K's arse, an ottoman.

I won't say which way I'm leaning but I will say that I shamelessly watched Keeping Up With The Kardashians for the first time yesterday. (No one needs to know that but us, right?)

What type of coffee table(s) do you have? Do you have a piece of furniture that you can't decide on? Does anyone else get 3 tables for their birthday?

celebrate good times, c'mon!

Kool and the Gang so early in the morning? I know, I'm a rebel.

Today is my birthday, so I'll be doing some of this
 and some of this.

Then tomorrow is more celebrating with this

And this.

A great time of year for a birthday! Enjoy the holiday if you are in the States. I'll be back on Thursday.
