If you have a life and it isn't on social media, does anyone notice it?
Hey, I remember you! Long time no see. I may have had to do a bit of internet sleuthing to 'remember' my password to login to ye old blog, but now that I'm back it is just like riding a bike. (You hit enter at the end of a paragraph, right? ha)
I've got some fun stuff to share with you but I can't jump into that without addressing my absence. That would be like trying to dance around the giant elephant in the middle of the room. And if you know me then you know, I don't dance.
The obvious question is - just where the hell have I been and why haven't I been blogging about whatever it is I've been doing?! I'll answer the first question by saying that I continue to work with really fun clients on really cool spaces and they keep this girl on her toes. I try my best to be with my babies who are less and less like babies every day. Tear. Eve is going to be starting Kindergarten in the fall, which would make many a mom sad but I just gleefully think about having both girls in school five days a week, all damn day. I'm one excited mom. I talk to the hubs about how we should have more date nights but never get around to planning said date nights. You know, the basics.
I'm not going to sit here and tell you that I haven't blogged because I'm... that horrible 4-letter B word. That is a copout. Everyone is b*#y. It's called having a life. Even my 5-year-old told me the other day how b*#y she was. It is all relative people, and I do not dare to think, nor do I want to insinuate that my daily schedule is any more difficult, more important or more fascinating than anyone else's and therefore gives me the excuse to not do something. Not gonna happen.
So this leads me to answer the second part of that question - why haven't I been blogging about whatever it is I've been doing? Now to be technical, I do Instagram all the live-long day (except for the past week or so, but I'll address that next time). But Instagram and a blog post are far from the same thing. So I'm just going to lay it out there. For me, blogging became...tainted is the first word that comes to mind. When I decided to join this blog world way back when it was for an honest desire to share my design thoughts and ideas with like-minded people who enjoyed ogling at well designed spaces and talking about fabric, paint and furniture placement. And I just like to write. It was no more thought out than that. I liked the community - sharing ideas, building friendships over similar interests, braiding flowers into each other's hair while we sang in a circle. OK, maybe not that last one, but you get the idea - it was fun. Just fun.
And then over time it became about making money, affiliate links, following the oh-so important (eye roll) blogging schedule, getting professional pictures taken for a post on changing out a shower curtain and other general hysteria. In short, it wasn't fun anymore. I wasn't into blogging to make a career out of blogging. I blogged to escape from my career for an hour or two a day. So I dropped the mic and went on with my life. I would think about it from time to time and say to myself I really should write something. But it was like when you haven't run in two years and you think back fondly on that marathon you ran way back when - it is a nice memory but the idea of 'getting back into it' seems overwhelmingly hard. So I didn't.
And then about a month ago I ran into someone I hadn't seen in quite some time and we had a glorious catch up until she said - "So what are you doing now?"
A bit confused I said, "Still at my design business. Things are going great actually, I'm about to..."
"Oh." She stopped me mid sentence, "I thought you quit that. You know, since you weren't blogging anymore."
Oh hell to the no girl! She needed that mat from Office Space because she was doing some major jumping to conclusions. But I couldn't be mad for long because she had a point. One of my greatest joys in life is also what I do for a living (lucky to say that) so of course my general chatting about design stuff would occasionally cross over into chatting about my design business stuff which would then end up on my 'not about work but about fun' blog. How's that for blurred lines? So I had a talk with myself and agreed that I shouldn't give up something I enjoy doing - talking about design and writing - just because the forum in which I was doing it was no longer fun. Don't hate the player, CHANGE the game.
So I'm not going to worry about the rules of blogging. I'm going to blog like its 2008. When I've got something to share, I'll do it. Sometimes there might be a picture, sometimes there won't. (gasp) I won't worry about what time to hit 'publish' in order to maximize my readership or make sure to give my post a title that will increase my search probability on Google. And I won't be plugging anything except my damn self.
There it is my friends. I'm putting the fun back into blogging. Boom. So if you want to hang out, grab a drink and let's chat. And if you are long gone that's OK too. After all, I gleefully wrote on this sucker for months before anyone noticed.
Cheers!
This is getting too long so I'll share my new news next time. What?! A post with plans for another one?! I know, crazy right.
I rarely comment on blogs, but I MUST to this one. I am sooooooo glad to read you'll be writing again and that it won't be about the moolah--the ads, the schedule, the whatever. I find it refreshing to know that you're in it for the love--the love of writing and sharing and connecting. So, this is my "you go, girl!"
ReplyDeleteI am SO glad you are back, Liz and I'm going to tell you why: you have inspired me in a way that I swear to God no other adult has since I was a student. I never thought I could do creative things and transform my home and furniture simply by painting or decorating with fun colors and now, it's an actual enjoyable hobby of mine. If not for you and your blog, and all the times you showed the steps of what you did or how a coat of paint can change anything or how you can add more colors than you would have thought - all of it - inspired me to transform my house. So THANK YOU! Please continue to post on the interesting things you do. It's so visually rewarding for me to see it and you give me great ideas. Much love, sister.
ReplyDeleteGlad you're back! My favorite blogs are the ones that keep it casual, little updates, not overly styled. Just seeing what talented and funny peeps are up to. Blogging as a career sounds exhausting. And what is with the bloggers on IG who have a photographer follow them around? Or are they attaching their phone to a lamp post or something? Anyway, rambling, sorry....I look forward to the news you're teasing us with. :)
ReplyDeleteBOOM!!! I always love your posts, whatever it is you are talking/writing about. It's like catching up with an old friend. You don't have to see each other everyday to feel connected. Whenever you do get together, it's always good :)
ReplyDeleteWhat are the chances that today, of all days, I went into my old Blogger feed...and saw this! How the heck are you? Still drinking? Me too! Missed you big time. We had some good laughs.
ReplyDeleteDang girl, are you in MY head?? I share the.very.same.feelings. And I blog very sporadically BUT definitely am b*#Y with clients. Thank you for putting this out there in blogland 2016 which is far from the good ole days of 2008!

Welcome back friend...I've been anxiously awaiting your arrival!!! Can't wait to see what you've been cooking up...don't stay away so long...I started to worry!!
ReplyDeleteSo happy you're back, your blog is one of my favorites and I'm always guaranteed a good laugh!
ReplyDeleteSo glad you're back!

ReplyDeleteglad you are back in the saddle. now let's rope some doggies!
Love, love, love this post. I am in a different industry, same boat from the blogging pressure/burnout perspective. Thank you for sharing this! The funny thing is, I was more likely to stop and open your email on your post today precisely because I haven't seen one in an a while. The ones that post less usually have something good to say when they do, and that makes it worth it for a reader. You leave us wanting more, which is a good thing. :)
ReplyDeleteAll I can say is ditto! Thanks for sharing your thoughts out loud...many of us have thought the same thing. You go girl, I will relish your sharing, no matter how occasional. I may not comment, but rest assured I am reading.
ReplyDeleteWas so glad to see you again but so I don't miss any of your goodness I'm now following you on Instagram too. I'll be happy to read whatever you talk about but am always interested in your furniture hunting and finding and making over. Your little family is very sweet so I'd be happy to see them here too.
ReplyDeleteWait. People make money on blogs? Lol. I blog for fun only. I enjoy all the friends I've made, love being invited into homes all over, and seeing amazing talent. We're all so different yet the same. This is my little daily enjoyment. No job, no pay, no professional input, just fun. Come on over anytime my friend for a good laugh! I'm so glad your back!!! I hear wine glasses clinking across the country.

Welcome back! Love reading your blog :)
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you're going to start writing again! I love your voice and what you have to share and that's the great thing about this, you can make your own rules!
ReplyDeletea to the men! i want to blog like it's 2008, too! actually i pretty much already am anyhow, but it's nice to know i am not alone!!!
ReplyDeleteYou are so good with words. I feel the same way. I need to take the pressure away from blogging more and more and just do what I like. I'm just glad you are back and that your absence wasn't for a bad reason. Lets start a movement! #bloglikeits2008 ;)
ReplyDeleteOh hell yeah!! So nice to see you back! I've missed you. A friend and I were just talking about this: "If I don't Instagram my breakfast does it mean I haven't eaten it? If I've gone somewhere and haven't blogged about it, does it mean I haven't gone?" and then I read this! I hate all the pressure that blogging 'full time' brings and I try not to let it get to me but if I could turn back time (sing that like Cher please), I would SO be blogging like it's 2008!! Bring back the fun casual side of it please for me so I can live vicariously through your awesomeness. xxx
ReplyDeleteYay. Just yay. I always loved your blog, and all these years later if someone were to say "Little Black Door" blog I'd be all "OMG do you remember that amazing entry she did?". It's burned into my memory forever. Welcome back!
ReplyDeleteWhy hello! I think I knew fairly quickly that I couldn't keep up a regular blogger schedule so I just never did but I can imagine the pressure that people are under to have a fresh perspective with amazing pictures daily and/or weekly. I say hell yeah to doing what makes YOU happy and on YOUR terms. I'll look forward to whatever/whenever you decide to blog.
ReplyDeleteThank you.
ReplyDeleteAmen! Just amen.
ReplyDeleteYayyy and how funny that I randomly posted the same day too...I was like oh wow I really like this random mix of items and let's put it out there to the interwebs to see if anyone else might like it too :) I've enjoyed following you on IG and on FB too.
ReplyDeleteMy first thought was "Yay, you're back," then I noticed everyone else used the exact same word to express the same thought. I've missed reading your interesting, entertaining posts, so YAY!
ReplyDeleteNever commented before, always liked how real you are...glad you're going "back" to 2008! I love blogs, but the forced ones are becoming more and more disappointing. Glad you decided to give it a go again!
ReplyDeleteTheresa
Yay, so happy to 'hear' from you. I've been following along on Instagram, but there is just something nice about reading a good old blog post. I love following along with bloggers that post when they have something instead of just posting to post. I look forward to hearing more.
ReplyDeleteSo excited to see this! I always enjoyed seeing your colorful spaces and reading your crafted words. Glad you decided to stick with us! Look forward to reading whatever, whenever you choose!
ReplyDeleteHappy to see this!! Great article!

So happy to see how well you're succeeding!
