mom, are you digging in the trash again?

It happened again. I find myself innocently driving down the street, minding my own business, when something catches my eye. That something being someone else's trash.
My car stops, and before I know it I've coerced my husband into helping me lift this into the trunk.

A great old built in. As we were trying to squeeze the odd triangle shape into our trunk a lady pulled up next to us and said, "if that doesn't fit in your car, I'll take it".
Paws off lady! Find your own trash!

This detail is on both ends and I love it.

Even a little extra fun at the bottom.

But as you can tell, it needs A LOT of work. I already know where its going to go - in the family room. It screams toy storage to me. And the fact that its a corner cabinet, that is just the space saving cherry on top!

So now for the big question - what color(s)? White and navy? White and black? Pink and purple? Just kidding, although that was my daughter's suggestion. (she's 4 so we'll let it slide). I'm open to any and all ideas you can throw at me.

  3. Ha! Love this post...sounds like talk in our house! I recently made my son drive a couple of streets over to pick up an old wooden screen door I found sitting on the curb during my nightly walk. It is a really cool one with all of the corbels and cool woodwork...similar one found online for $500! Score! Not sure what to do with it yet...but I will find something!

That old built in cabinet will look great in your family room...and perfect for toy storage. How about Black and White with Kelly Green accents! Love that combo...so fresh and clean! Cant wait to see the "after"!!

  10. The considerable magic of this piece is in the charming trim and cutout details. Personally, I would go easy on the painting technique, so that those details, and not my paint job, are what I notice first on the finished piece. In the top photo, unglamorous as it is, I love the way the light plays across the detailing on the ends, allowing shadows to bring my eye in. And look how the dark space underneath highlights the little half-circle cutout under the angled part of the piece. My first instinct: stay white, or close to it.

  12. Hi Elizabeth! I always see you commenting on the same blogs as I do so I decided to check out your lovely blog, which I am enjoying :)

What an awesome trash find, don't you just love when that happens? How about Kelly Green? Out of the colors you mentioned , I gotta go with navy. Hope you stop by some time :)

  13. Hi Elizabeth! This post is so familiar to me! I can't count the number of times I have had to get the kids out of the van so I could rearrange their carseats to fit in something that I saw on the street. One time when I was out walking with my 4 year old, he actually helped me carry home a bench we found. (I think he's going to be a flea market junkie like me though). Anyway, what a find! Can't wait to see what you do with it. It has so much beautiful detail.

I love the idea of green too but navy is so beautiful and classic.
