I used to be a fan of Restoration Hardware. For a long time, I had a hookup to 'Resto' and enjoyed a healthy discount. And believe me, I used it. I've gotten a number of things from them over the years - from the paint color in my living room to my old dining room table.
But just like your senile aunt, I think Restoration Hardware has finally lost their marbles.
It was crazy enough when Resto started making all of their furniture to fit the Jolly Green Giant, but now we have this.
Are you kidding me?
Not only is the 'deconstructed' part rough to the touch but I felt that fabric in the store people and it is nothing but muslin. You know, the fabric they use on Project Runway as their template...before they sew on the real fabric.
I think this came from a dare at Restoration Hardware headquarters. At happy hour one night and they started playing the 'would people buy it' game. Crazy Herb from accounting said, "just take our existing chairs and pull the fabric off." Oh Herb!
Save yourself $1600. If you are interested in a chair like this, I'll be happy to pull something off the side of the road for you and just rip the upholstery off.
What do you think? Are you picking up what Restoration is throwing down? And don't let my subtle opinion influence you in any way. :)
I am laughing my rear off, Elizabeth.I kind of gave up on them when I really couldn't afford a thing in their catalog or store, but this is absurd. Isn't this chair an example all those before pictures of the treasures we score at Goodwill and garage sales?! You could have earned some nice cash for your sofa when you were in the reupholstering phase, lol!
ReplyDeleteThe whole happy hour scenario you imagined is cracking me up.
You are so right! Crazy indeed. And their prices are getting larger and larger to match the size of their growing furniture. Isn't this the age when people are trying to live smaller and more eco-friendly?
ReplyDeleteGreat blog and post.

Yeah, I pretty much thought the same thing when I got the catalog and saw this stuff. Yuk. I used to love them (my sofa is from there via Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams). Ridiculous now...
ReplyDeleteUgly! I don't know why people would buy it. I haven't been a fan of them for awhile becauase they've gone too far into that whole vibe of unfinished meets hardware items. Stuff needs a final coat of something! Maybe they'll learn and fix their problems soon and go back to what they were known for!
ReplyDeleteI have to agree with you on this one........yuck a tooey! You are too funny and by the way I work in accounting no Herb here LOL!
ReplyDeleteToo funny - definitely not for me, although I guess I wouldn't have to worry about my cat scratching the furniture ;)
ReplyDeleteYou are too funny! I know - I saw this chair too and couldn't believe it. The price is crazy and then it looks like it went through the car wash and then part of it caught on fire. How great that you had a discount for a while! I bet their tables last forever. This chair, though, not so sure! :)
ReplyDeleteHa! No Kidding! I am a fan of "thinking outside the box" sometimes...but they should climb back inside that box and re-think this one...perhaps before Happy Hour! :}
ReplyDeleteLol! That's why I stick to the "hardware" part of resto.
ReplyDeleteToo funny! That chair is ridic and no I don't shop there bc they are way overpriced!
ReplyDeleteSo wrong on so many levels. I want to know how many they've sold. And who's bought one! Sounds like a reality show in the making.
ReplyDeleteGosh and they used to have some really cute stuff a few years back. They really lost me when they did that whole aviator collection - it just felt weird. I think they're trying to be forward thinkers and they're way off the mark. Fun post!

You are making me laugh! I agree!! Seems like a waste of money! Hit up a thrift store!
ReplyDeleteI think Herb must have been smoking some herb! Ha - that is horrible.
ReplyDeleteIt's sort of like a case of the emperor not having any clothes! I read a post on Cote de Texas about this recently and Joni said the crazy thing is you could get the antique, real McCoy, version of the pieces Resto is knocking off, strip off the upholstery, and it would be cheaper! I may be in the minority here, but I think one deconstructed piece in an otherwise beautifully finished room could be very lovely. I do agree that this is over priced and over the top.
ReplyDeleteGreat post Elizabeth!

That's stupid...and really pretentious of them to think just because they're RH that people will buy their shit, literally!! I feel the same way about PB...there stuff looks that same as it did 15 years ago...
ReplyDeleteBahaha! You cracked me up. I agree- what the heck??? I don;t even want to know who would spend that kind of money on that chair.
ReplyDeleteI love RH as well, but so far have only picked purchases for clients here. My budget is a little more Pottery Barn & IKEA that RH. Now, I doubt IKEA would pull crap like that...
Yeah that is one ugly chair! I swear I saw one identical to one on Craigslist and they only wanted $20.00 and a vintage one at that, even better :)
ReplyDeleteLooks like my furniture I gutted from my 11ft flooded/destroyed home from Hurricane Katrina. Wow...I could have made a fortune with my stuff!!LOL
ReplyDeleteI would have to work hard to make it look this bad!
ReplyDeleteThis takes horrible to a whole new level! Seriously laughing at how many people have this in their homes right now thinking they're soooo in style.
ReplyDeleteListen, I wrote RH off when they started sending my catalogs thicker than the Bay Area's phone book.
ReplyDeleteThat, to me, is disgusting and such a waste.

Hey Elizabeth! I read this last night near nodding off and I was laughing gafahs, amid sputters as to not wake up my husband. I was also getting a kick out of the comments above, too. Your design talent is great and I LOVE LOVE LOVE your humor. Keep at it, it's so great!!!!
ReplyDeleteOh I'm so glad I'm not alone in this - I thought it was pretty crazy too and their catalog as well that I've never even opened.
ReplyDeleteHahaha you are hysterical!! Extremely well put and so true!
