rug-less dining rooms

I'm currently working on a little experiment in the dining room. As much as I love that big chunky sisal rug, it is a pain in my arse. It is not very easy to clean when little ones drop their food and it sheds like a...something that sheds a lot. It's like having another dog in the house.

So after cursing at it and complaining about it, I had the hubs help me to roll it up and take it out. Just to see how it felt.

And so far I'm loving it. It's like cutting off all your hair, or a long hot shower after a camping trip. I feel lighter, and my vacuum is happy for a rest.

I was a bit perplexed about a room without a rug but the more I see it around, the more I like it.

So, a dining room without a rug (gasp). What do you think?

  1. I am not a fan of dining room carpet/rugs-hard to move the chairs, clean up the food, etc.

I think I would use an outdoor rug if I were to put one under my table-but I love our hardwoods, so it's all good -so far :)

  2. I think it looks great! I have to agree with you that with kids it's such a pain having a rug under the table! I think it just depends on the room, whether you need a rug or not. Your dining room is a perfect one to not have a rug in because it's such a defined space, so you don't need a rug to say "here is where the dining room is". At our last house I was dying for one because our floor plan was so big and open that our dining room table just looked lost on a sea of tile. In this house I can totally get away without one because the dining room feels like it's own separate room, but I hate our floor so I'm trying to hide as much of it as I can. :) But when I'm scrubbing oatmeal out of the rug I'm very tempted to roll it up and go bare!!

  3. Although I love the look of rugs in the dining room, it is so much more practical without one. Your dining room looks great without a rug.

  4. I like it. A fresh change, and then, I predict you will change again ;)

  5. Sounds like a positive change.

I don't know if I was lied to or just confused about this material's durability but it has been a mess. We put a couple down in the kitchen and dirt just clings to them. Even after vacuuming they look scummy. Ugh.

  6. No gasping here. There's no way I could even entertain a rug under my table. Not in this house. We are too messy, crummy and spilly.;)

  7. i bought rug a few (7) yrs ago just because it was under a dinning table at the furniture store. but got it to my home and said, nope, too messing and this rug will be ruined!!! personally, i have never had a rug under a table, ever ~ but then again my home would never be in a decor magazine, 'ither. Nice post Elizabeth, nice!

Ps. it's been a while, huh?

  9. i am a fan of either- we have been rugless in the dining room for a long time, but when mohawk asked me to review a rug i got one for that room. i like it both ways- it feels cozier to me with the rug, but open and clean without it.

  10. I much prefer dining rooms without rugs. A better look and feels clean and fresh.

  11. We've been rug-less for awhile, since our dog has a thing for peeing on rugs (lucky us). I love the coziness that rugs add, but it's awesome to not have to worry about keeping them clean and when you have a nice floor to show off, why cover it up with a rug? Now I just have to get some nice floors haha...

    1. We have a dog that likes to do her business on our dining room rug too!!! Ugh! So I think we are going to a bare floor. Does your dog still diddle in that room?

  12. We currently do not have a rug in our dining room. It is easier to maintain, but I feel like the room looks a little empty for me. You have amazing light and pattern from the pillows on the bench, but I don't have those. I am looking for a flatwoven Turkish-style rug for in there perhaps.

  13. It looks great- fresh and still really full of style! I am weird about rugs in dining rooms just bc of the spilled food factor.

  14. Totally think it depends upon the room - if you need to define the space, I think they are great but in your dining room - NAKED IS GOOD. Love it, it looks fresh and your floors are gorgeous so let those babies shine :) xxx

  15. In place of a rug (which seems wonderful to do without) you could paint a rug sized pattern on the floor under the dining table :)

  16. I am absolutely for a rugless dining room. We did the same thing with our large sisal rug a few years ago. I found it difficult to move the cahirs in and out and also difficult to clean. We've never looked back! I think it looks great as long as you have some other softness and interest in the room.

  17. Nothing more beautiful than practicality! Love your dining room!

  18. At my family home we tore out the carpet and put in hardwood in our dining/living room. While we put an area rug in the living room half, we kept the dining room half with bare wood. It just doesn't make much sense. Wine is drank there, turkeys are carved there, gravy is poured there. I love hardwood floors, why not showcase them a little? Love the change.

  19. I was rugless in my dining room for years. It made things really easy. Then one day I hated the rug in my living room, thinking it made the space too dark and put it under my dining room table. Now I'm rugless in my living room (a more formal room, not where we spend all our time) and I love it. The dogs aren't messing with it and it helps ground our table in our dining room. I may buy a smaller runner to put under our sofa but it still leaves a lot of room open. It feels a lot better without a rug some times, like you said.

  20. Check out my blog and you will see another rugless dining room. I love the clean, fresh, open feel of the room without a rug and it is much easier to clean up after a messy meal!! I like your room without a rug,

  21. As much as I love rugs, I like rugless rooms a lot. It so much easier to eradicate the dust bunnies on hardwood.

  22. Love it! I actually don't have a rug under my dining room table because it just wouldn't work with the room and I actually really like it

  23. I have a very cheap rug in our dining, so getting it dirty doesn't ruffle my feathers a bit ($100 for an 8 x 10). Our breakfast nook is rugless though and that's the one we use more often, I will never put a rug there until my kids are all grown-up. :-)
Here's a pic of my cheapo dining room rug. .... http://buhayatbahay.blogspot.com/2012/04/and-winners-are-dining-room-update.html

  25. girl - i am so with ya! I dont have a rug under my dining table (there isnt room, i would if i could) and I'm pretty good with it. Yours looks great - WORK IT :)

  26. I've always thought it's a little weird to have a rug in a dining room, scooting the chairs in and out would be a pain, plus spilled food...gross! I've never seen one under a kitchen table so why feel the need to have it under a dining table?

  27. Popular topic and one not discussed often enough, huh? I'm rug-free in my dining room too. There is absolutely no way we could have anything in there, even though quite a number of folks have suggested I put one there. Not even a Dash and Albert squirt-it-off-in-the-driveway would work. And that's just fine by me. I think your dining room is gorgeous and you have enough softness in there to forgo a rug anyway with the curtains and pillows on your bench.

Love those Windsor chairs and fun patterns on the plates on the wall. Love that color on the wall too!

  28. Thank you for sharing this! I currently do not have a rug under my dining room table... or curtains on the windows, or chairs around the table... aaahhhh... so much fun having to wait until you have the money to purchase these things?! :). However, I am totally loving this post, since I am annoyed with any of the rugs I have going under the table anyway. Thank you for approving one less thing on my list to worry about/purchase! Yippee!!

  29. we have no rug. I stress enough about spills on the chairs so it's one less worry and I like the look. It's also easy to pull the chairs in and out.

  30. We too don't have a rug under our table in the dining room and every time I clean up after a meal I say a little "Amen." I cannot even imagine how bad it would smell at this point if we had one. I bet you are going to love it!

  31. I TOTALLY AGREE!! Never understood rugs under a DR table other than for aesthetic reasons.....more of a hassle than anything (chairs catching on it, cleaning up crumbs, spills, etc). Love how your DR looks sans rug!!

  33. Great share..

Love the washable rugs under the dining areas. I generally prefer to machine washable area rugs in my dining area.
