Today is a holiday so the girls are home and I am playing hooky but I did want to throw something out there. I think I missed the memo. I knew that the end was near for normal lightbulbs (I even talked about it here), but I thought I had more time to build up my stock pile. Now I learned that this is the year 40 and 60 watt lightbulbs are being phased out. Why mean government are you trying to deprive us of good lighting?!
So in anticipation of the day when my stockpile will run dry, I need to know - what kind of lightbulbs do you use? Have you found a CFL or whatever they are called, that you like? And one that doesn't make you look like a corpse?
Help a girl out!
ReplyDeleteI am OBSESSED with these lights AND your chandy.
I like the LED's. They are pure white, almost blue.
ReplyDeleteUgh, I'm stockpiling too! I hate the "energy efficient" options and have refused so far... I'll be sure to be checking back in for some good alternatives!
ReplyDeleteI like LEF or CFL that says "soft white". Good luck with your stock pile but on the other hand, someday, when you supply runs out, you have an excuse to get new lighting?! ;-)
ReplyDeletei am with you and no have not found anything i like. BOO.
ReplyDeleteI will be stockpiling. I can't stand the energy efficient ones, and want my incandescents!
ReplyDeleteBuying a new light bulb used to be so easy. Walk in, grab a new one that was just like the old one, walk out. Now...what the what?!? An entire aisle with options that are confusing...and down right annoying. The bulbs in my bathroom actually have to "warm up" before I can even attempt to fix my face! Ugh...stockpiling sounds like a good idea.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the reminder... I need to start stockpiling stat!!
ReplyDeleteXOXO,
The Glam Pad
I feel like you…I totally had no clue that it was happening so soon. Boo. I have no idea what to get and I will check back to see what you end up going with. I must now hurry out to Lowe's to buy up all the 40 & 60 watt bulbs! ;)
ReplyDeleteI use 75 and 100 watts as I need the brighter light now that I am in my 50's, and stockpiled about 6 months ago, buying in bulk on amazon!
ReplyDeleteThe new LED's are very nice now, will use them in my new house once we have the remodel underway.
I HATE the energy efficient/LED/awful depressing lights! I tried stockpiling last time I went to the store, and apparently others had the same idea I did. Ugh...What about Christmas lights?? Are we going to be stuck using the awful ones with weird blueish cast!??
ReplyDeleteIsn't that so lame! My husband keeps replacing our bulbs throughout the house with the blindingly white light things. I do kind of like the clean light, but I really don't like how bright they are! I didn't realize how dirty our kitchen was until he replaced the can lights. Yikes!
ReplyDeleteI'm actually upset about this. Like, really upset. Can't stand the new bulbs...and yes, they do make everyone look awful. Ugh....
ReplyDeleteso funny we are both talking about lightbulbs today! The ones I linked to today are the first ones I've actually liked. All the others are so harsh and the light is so fake looking. I like softer lighting. I still can't use them everywhere though since the glass is frosted so they aren't what I'd want in a spot with exposed lightbulbs. I like totally clear bulbs for those areas since they are always on display.
ReplyDeleteThey've already pretty much phased them out in Europe. You can still get them in a few places but once the stock is out, that's it. Sigh. I've gone with the soft white bulbs which aren't so bad but when you first put them on, you have to wait a bit for them to fully light the space. Pfft. That chandy is so badass though, for realz. xxx
ReplyDeleteMy husband has changed so many of our lightbulbs to the new ones...and yes they may make one look like a corpse....I guess we will get used to them...but they are no fun. I love that photo of your chandy! You are just so creative!
ReplyDeleteAmen Girl...and has any one addressed the health factors associated with these bulbs? They make lots of ppl physically ill. Just the toxic gases emitted that the guys making the laws could care less about.
ReplyDeleteDon't get me started...so annoyed by the demise of the good ol' fashioned light bulb
ReplyDeleteI live in a 100+ year old home and I use various types of lights for the chandeliers and sconces. For the lights that we need on in dark hallways, I use the energy efficient kind: there are some now that have the pinched point -like the candelabra type - that look ok. I picked up one that looks similar in shape to a regular bulb but it uses $1.40 worth of energy per year! I use the faux Edison light bulbs for my chandeliers on the main floor. We have so many lights on dimmers and the new kind cannot be used for those! I do believe that technology will produce new bulbs that are what we prefer for the warmth etc. and we may have to wait a while, but it is in the best interest of our beautiful planet so I am good with the change to that end!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the reminder! I use 40 watt bulbs with a shape just like the shape you pictured for my kitchen light fixture. I just checked my Amazon status, and I ordered them in June of last year - I don't think any of them have gone out yet! Which makes me think they are definitely very energy efficient. I do love them, so I just ordered more of the same bulb to have on hand when these do finally go out. Thanks again for the reminder!!
ReplyDeleteUgh, I hate the new light bulbs too. I didn't realize that I needed to be working on a stockpile!!
ReplyDeleteI don't mind the LED bulbs in my kitchen because I like the bright light when I am working in my kitchen, but I have them on a dimmer so I can tone it down when I want to. The rest of the house is a different story...I hate them.My husband just switched out the ones in our bathroom to LED and the lighting is so different that I feel like I need to change my lipstick color or something....I am trying to stockpile, but everyone seems to have the same idea!

That is a good idea to do LED bulbs in the kitchen. I never feel like it is bright enough in there when I am cooking dinner - I thought I was just getting old and couldn't see as well! Ha!
DeleteI hate the new lighting. I feel like I'm in an office 24/7. Boo hiss. I never thought about stockpiling though. Duh!!
ReplyDeleteTotally with you on this. Definitely going to start stockpiling. :)
ReplyDeleteI understand that there is a bill being introduced to stop this, but I am with ou. Stay out of our homes!

It's not as much about the bulb but more about the color rendering. You need one that has a CRI of an incandescent bulb (2700-3500 which is daylight), that information can usually be found but you really have to search. I'd just recommend trying out the LEDs until you find one you like. I hate the mercury in fluorescent bulbs, it makes me tense because I have a small furry monster that has a tendency to knock things over and I worry about them breaking.
ReplyDeletei just found this post lol. i am moving onto filling my second plastic crate with lightbulbs as the cfl's actually give me a horrible headache. hopefully when my stash runs out in 20 years they will have improved them. my house is full of dimmers, even our lamps are dimmed and having to switch to full on lightbulbs or the extremely expensive dimmable cfl's is not cool.
