feet up or laying down

I was lucky enough to win a design consult with the lovely Jessie at Mix and Chic and we have been working on our family room/playroom. She has come up with some really great ideas and I can't wait to start working on the space, but it has brought up an ongoing discussion in our house.

Sectionals.

The hubs and I like our couch time. We log many hours on that sucker (isn't it our duty as Americans?) and we require comfort.

Our first couch, god rest its soul, was the single greatest couch created. We scored it at a consignment shop when we got our first apartment and that thing was sent straight from heaven. Perfect for napping, spooning (TMI?) and plenty of room to seat an army. It wasn't a sectional but was the size of a barge. And it made it thru three apartments before it just got too big and too beat up to drag along any longer. Insert lone tear here.

So when we moved into our current we got a new couch for the family room and 5 1/2 years later the thing is beat up, full of saggy cushions and frankly, not that comfortable. So the sectional debate begins again.

For whatever reason, when I thought of sectionals, I always thought of those bad 80'couches that take up a whole room with bad burgundy fabric and overstuffed head cushions and la-z-boys at the end.

But, sectionals have come a long way baby. I think I am in love. And so the discussion has shifted to what kind of sectional.

A full sectional?

Or a sectional/chaise option?

Do you have a sectional? Is there one you recommend?

  1. We have a huge sectional. And we love it. Everyone who comes over has a place to sit and we love to lounge on it. I prefer the full sectional to the one with the chaise because I don't think they seat as many people and they aren't as comfortable as the big daddy.
One piece of advice I have is that you should be sure of the colour and fabric you pick since it takes up a lot of real estate in your room!

  2. Ah yes, the lay-z-boy...I do not own a sectional but my cousin recently bought hers from Pottery Barn...that's about as much help as I can be...

  3. I vote for the sectional with a chaise option. We have a giant den and I have been pining for one for years. I see myself wrapped up on a cold day on one of those bad boys.

  4. I had a sectional sofa with the chaise option from our previous home. At first, I love the idea of sectional sofas. I thought they must be great/ comfy to rest your feet, provide extra seating, etc. Now, I totally regret it.

When we relocate, we brought the sectional sofa with us but unfortunately, it's too bulky for the room. Most sectionals eat up a lot of valuable space and they are usually not very flexible configuration wise. If I had known, I would have bought two regular sofas combo/ one sofa with a bench and two ottomans combo (to rest my feet) for a more flexible living room configuration. In the end, we got another regular sofa for our current living room.

Anyway, these are just my thoughts and something for you to consider.

Have a good day and thanks for the shout out, Elizabeth! Hope you had a wonderful Mother's Day celebration yesterday.

  5. We have the chaise option and it's very similar to the gray one with the giraffe in its picture. We got it from Ashley and really like it. The one downsize is the detached cushions on the back. They are fine for the most part but I have a feeling that my husband will smash them down and we'll be replacing pillows some day. Nothing major, but still something to think about. I was reading on another blog the other day about their search for a couch and how one of their requirements was attached back cushions so they wouldn't get flatten. But... other than that, it's great. It's a dark charcoal, it doesn't suck up animal fur like our last couch, and there's plenty of room for two adults to lay down and a sleeping baby too! My parents always end up with a sleeping 3 year old when they are babysitting and they still all have room. It's great!

  6. I've had both and I don't think I prefer one over the other- the one we have now is the kind with the chaise on one end and it's really nice to be able to stretch out while watching tv. But with a full sectional there is so much seating that you usually have the extra space to stretch out across one side of it if you want to. So I think it just comes down to which one fits in your room the best, and then if both kinds do, then just which kind you find that you like the look of better. I'm so excited to see your room! I love Jessie, she's so sweet and talented and I'm sure has tons of great ideas for your room. And you are already super talented yourself and have such great taste, so with the two of you coming up with ideas for it, your family room is going to be amazing!! I'm so excited to see!

  7. We got a sectional almost two years ago and it was a big compromise bt me and my hubby. He wanted a leather sectional (I am not a big leather person) and I wanted a new dining room. Compromise happened and I can now say almost two years later that he was right in wanting one and I have grown to love it. It makes a lot of sense and looks really great in the space! Go for it! :)

  8. We have a Sherrill sectional in our basement and we love it! Depending on your size requirements I would vote for a smaller sectional with a chaise on the end. Can't wait to see what you do!

  9. I love sectionals and hope to switch out our sofas for one soon! I love the first image you showed. It reminds me of the PB Comfort sectional from Pottery Barn. Best of luck with the search! I love the images you showed! And thanks for weighing in on the rug debate on my blog today. :)

  10. I'm not going with the majority on this one. I have been looking for a sectional (not very seriously) for some time. I don't like the kind that has the "bed" at one end. That cushion always looks so worn and it is too chunky for me. I am actually in love with the vintage sectionals that you get reupholstered professionally (too much for me to tackle). The scale is good and the lines are cool. The only problem is that they are hot now, and finding one at a good price is tough.

  11. It would have to depend not he space and the style of the sectional. I feel that I would be limited to the space planning options if I had a sectional, but the comfort and the amount of seating is hard to pass up. I know... not much help, but if you like them... go with it!

  12. Thanks for posting about this - I've been coveting a sectional/chaise for what feels like ages and the comments have given me lots to consider! Good luck with your search, can't wait to see what you choose :)

  13. I wish I could use a sectional in our family room, but with the configuration, it won't work. It sounds like my sofa is in the same condition as yours! If I could do a sectional in there, I would do it in a second!

  14. WE are having a similar debate! Although ours is couch vs. sectional..I would prefer a couch and 2 chairs, the hubs thinks it's more formal since our living room is our family room and main lounge area...anyhoo, onto your question. I love the full sectionals. I think it truly gives extra seating whereas the chaise option is really only good for lounging. HOwever, if you have less space, the chaise is a good option because it looks more open. Good luck!

  15. I have a sectional-- and it's LaZboy, but it's not what you are thinking. It does not have a recline function. :) I've had it for about 10 or 11 years now and it is still so comfy and nice looking that I can't even consider a new sofa! It is a full sectional, no chaise. I love it. You are welcome to come visit it any time! -A.

  17. Oops I totally meant to say sectional. Although I did swear I'd buy a recliner if I ever get pregnant again. Ha!

  18. I love sectionals! I have the a PB sectional downstairs and the Rowe Masquerade upstairs. The great thing about the Rowe is it is slipcovered and with 2 kids and 4 dogs, you best believe it has been washed a plenty. I used to own a furniture store and I sold Rowe and Lee. 2 hugely different price points, for sure, but I sold a ton of the Rowe sectionals and everyone loved them. Good luck on your hunt! {I love your blog!}
