seasonal style

We survived spring break! Several play dates, outings, babysitters, and a husband gone most of the week for work and we made it. Monday is here and a normal schedule can resume. Hip hip hooray! (Funny, that isn't the same reaction I used to have to the end of spring break)

One thing I did to fill my time after the girls were in bed each night was read a stack of magazines as tall as my dog. Which, in my opinion, is a damn good time. But it stirred up the yearly quest for change - a chance to sprurce things up again after the season so evil we will not speak its name.

Magazines and designers have long encouraged the idea of having spring/summer accessories (pillows, throws, curtains, etc.) and then a stash for fall/winter. The theory being the changes would be enough to make you feel as though you have a 'new room' of sorts without having to do any major (and expensive) changes.

Glitter Guide
Now I'm not talking "decorations" like throwing pumpkins around the room in the fall and adding rabbits in the spring. I mean decor, subtle but substantial changes that would give a different feel to a room. My trouble is always that my whim to change things never seems to line up with the change of seasons. Go figure.

So what do you think? Is this a "sounds great in theory but I'll never do it" kind of thing? Do you have a stash of pillows that you change out with the seasons?

  1. Absolutely! I layer my darker rugs in the fall and add in more fur (pillows and throws) and overall darker colors. Come January is all gets rolled up for a much more sparse look. Candles are all white, floors are down to the sisals. Come spring I start to roll out the colorful pillows and accessories. Kitchen rug always changes with the season. I like to call it tweaking....

  2. I do somewhat change things up with the season every year but nothing major.

  3. It always sounds good but I never do it! The only thing I do each year is change out my outdoor pillows because they never seem to look fresh after one season. Have a happy day!

  4. I probably should tweak more but find that I don't. Mainly it's because of the specific color in my throw pillows - it doesn't change. If I did change the pillows, it would clash with my rug. Oh, the horror. I do find myself playing with some accessorizing more though and of course, I love spring flowers everywhere throughout the house.

  5. I don't have a stash of pillows or anything like that that I change with the seasons. I mean it's cute in theory. But yeah. Would never do it.

  6. Sounds great in theory but it doesn't work for me......my house is year round.....maybe on the terrace I might get new cushions or something.....but I like investing in year round things so much more than just one season.

  7. Its not a seasonal thing for me. Its more an "I am sick of looking at that" thought that gets me to change something. That and ORC linking.

  8. I do! Pillow covers that is. I love changing my decor thru different seasons, and I try not to look back at the old pictures of my home to really make a real CHANGE! I haven't gotten to my Spring decorating yet but I will soon. :-)

  9. I think it's a good idea. Fur pillows and throws are much better and add a cozier feel in the summer, but don't really fit for the warmer months, for example.

  10. I'm a decorating rebel of sorts. I sometimes put out spring/summer accessories during winter when the short days and lack of greenery are getting me down.

  11. I don't switch out much seasonally. Once I find a mix I like I stick with it until I'm ready for a change. I've been going through stacks of old magazines too...I think they're multiplying!

  12. Yep, I am definitely a seasonal decor updater. :) I start to feel claustrophobic if I have too many wintery/cozy fabrics around in the warmer months. Since the darn snow won't seem to go away, though, I'm a bit behind schedule this year. I realized yesterday that I still have an evergreen wreath on my front door - ack!

  13. My kids went back to school today as well, hallelujah! On the switching things up, I somewhat do it. It comes down to pillows and certain art that I change out, but I don't wait to do it, when the moment arises and I'm feeling the need I switch things up right away.

  14. I do it without really even thinking about it. Sunnier weather just makes me feel the need for brighter colors and lighter wood tones. Winter makes me bring in soft cozy blankets and metallic accessories.

  15. I think it's a great idea! If your basic fabrics allow for it, it means every spring or fall or winter you could change your throw pillows, some accessories and bedding, and voila! A new look for the season at maybe under $2,500 - $5,000:)
If you have room in your garage cabinets (which i don't), you could keep everything labeled by season!

  16. My idea of freshening things up usually involves flowers. I'm hoping to finally get around to updating our house this year. Last year was such a whirlwind with moving, baby #2, etc - so this is our year (I hope).

  17. Man you guys had Spring Break early! Ours isn't until mid April. Anywhooo, YES I change out my décor with the seasons. Im the worst about pillows and throws. I have a ridiculous amount and I love it. I like for my interior to reflect whatever's going on outside.

  18. Absolutely, I have done this for years! I change pillows, art work, lamps and shades at times. Here is a post showing my change out for summer......http://goodlifeofdesign.blogspot.com/2013/08/a-summer-arrival-at-my-house_13.html
I have a Spring, Summer and Winter/Fall look.
    Love making the changes!....

  19. So do I but I never did until I started reading blogs. I love the change it makes, I'll be bringing out the green pillows soon!

  20. This is such a timely post because over the fall and winter I made some selections that I'll be incorporating into my living room and dining room and they all have a warm, cozy feel. Now that spring is here I want to change my mind and do fresher, brighter colors. Always a day late and a dollar short. :-(

  21. That is exactly why I went super neutral in my current house, so I could change it up with accessories. I felt so committed to a color scheme in my last two houses and having the ability to bring in any color on a whim is much better for someone like me who has commitment issues with decor.

  22. A second set of pillows AYKM? I can barely make it through a day with all that needs to get done. Switching pillows and such, is an organized person's problems.

  23. Catching up on design mags is absolutely my idea of a good time! But I don't really switch thing around for the seasons... especially living in South Florida, where we have only two seasons - warm and HOT!!!

  24. I did that for a bit, but it was kind of exhausting. There are certain things I add or take away, like putting away faux fur and things like that. I usually just ended up buying a lot of new each season instead of pulling out the old!

  25. I love the whole "change it up with the seasons" idea in theory but I'm just not that organized and disciplined. My switching around of things in the house is entirely on a whim - more fun that way!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Yep. Great in theory but it ain't gonna happen anytime soon. Love the idea though.

  27. I'm with you. My urge for change never seems to revolve around the seasons. Though I do like spy on how others change things out with the seasons...

  28. I do pillows and plants and fluff the kitchen table with spring placemats. I love seeing how others do it to but I'm usually playing catch up!

  29. I am always changing but not based on the seasons. It's simply because I get bored readily or maybe us creatives always have new ideas, so our homes become our laboratories:-)

  30. Spring is here. Finally!
We can freshen up our homes ...
For me, new candles with Spring scents & some fresh flowers are great ways to freshen up a house.

I invite you to visit my blog.

  31. I definitely rely on flowers to harken the change of seasons, especially the transition from winter to spring. Other than that, I'm constantly changing things around here so nothing is too constant around here anyway!

  32. What a stunning post! It seriously has my heart aflutter! Love your eye.

  33. Great in theory, not so practical for me! I swap things out when I get tired of it which really can happen any time of year but it probably does end up being every couple months or so - I have a very short attention span when it come to decor! xx

  34. I love the idea! But I'm not sure I would ever do it. I took one of my pillow covers to the dry cleaners two months ago. The insert is still sitting on my couch and I think the cover is still in my car. But I do love to buy flowers in the spring!

  35. Dude. I have a straight up pillow problem ;) xo K
