got a light?

Happy Monday everyone! I hope your weekend was a good one. We all survived spring break but I will say I was happy for a return to 'normal' this morning.

I was at Lowe's yesterday (surprise, surprise) and once again I couldn't pull the trigger and buy energy efficient bulbs.

Recycling, eating organic, buying locally, low VOC - I'll help mother earth out as much as the next girl. But when it comes to lighting, I'm a bit hardheaded. (ok, I'm really hardheaded about a lot of things, but I won't go there. not without drinks.)

I like mood lighting. I don't have a bulb in my house that's over 40 watts. We have recessed lighting (halogen) in a few rooms and we have dimmers everywhere we can. But with the government starting to shake me down, and phasing out regular bulbs over the next few years (yes, I am hoarding my 25 and 40 watt bulbs like I'm preparing for nuclear war), I'm realizing that I need to adapt to this wether I like it or not.

So Halogen, CFL, LED. What do you know? What do you use? What do you like?

  1. I totally agree saving all of the "old school" lighting I have left! Will our children grow up in a world filled with weird flourescent looking lighting everywhere? Is there no way that this can be created in hallogen form? I find this so bizarre!!

  2. My energy company sends out free CFLs in the hope that you will put them in your home and save more energy. Instead I've been hoarding them and waiting until all of my current bulbs die out. The CFLs are pretty nice and I barely notice the difference of color. I haven't stayed in one place long enough to see how long they last, but my parents use them too and I haven't heard any complaints.

  3. oooohhh I am so onboard with you! I am big on green but honestly...can't get rid of dimmers! I have heard there are now some dimmable cfl's, but I'm not sure what the options are for potlights.

  5. We participated in a government eco-energy program and got a bunch of free energy-saving light bulbs as a result. I've always hated the harsh light from the CFLs, but the new dimmable LEDs are awesome - they give off a much softer light. They are pretty expensive, but supposedly worth the cost in terms of how long they last and the energy they save.

  6. eek I agree! I HATE the energy efficient lighting!! It makes me feel like I'm sitting in a laboratory. Or like a spaceship is getting ready to touch down in my living room and is casting its glaring bluish-white light everywhere. So unflattering. Plus I read somewhere that if you break one of those lightbulbs you have to call a hazmat team to clean it up?? (cause of the mercury or something??) Anyways we've used them sometimes but my hubby always bought them so not sure the brand. All I know is I hate them so I always end up having him switch them out for regular bulbs.

  7. LED! Costs a bit more in the beginning, but you're saving LOTS over a lifetime...usually takes approx. 2 years to begin seeing the savings, but if you're in it for the long haul, LED is DEF the way to go! Good luck!

  8. So interesting -- I know nothing about all of this except that I don't like being told what lighting I have to have in my house. I've never even heard of a CFL. Dallas isn't the greenest city in the nation, and it looks like I have some learning to do!

  9. I'm a 40 watt girl too...hate overhead lighting!! I'm going to have to start hoarding too!

  10. I have made the switch and it is not all that bad! But yes there are a few lamps in my house that I just can't replace, and the 40 watt will remain!

  11. I am having trouble switching over as well... I don't think the government gets it :)
