too much of a good thing?

Mary McDonald

Good Monday one and all. How's everyone today? Both of the girls have the next two days off school, so I'm pulling some tricks from my hat to entertain the crowd. But while I'll be coloring another picture of Elsa from Frozen and making playdough, I'll really be thinking of this room from Mary McDonald.

Can you ever have too much of a good thing in a room? I love red (I know I'm in the minority) and pink, which is really just 'diet red', so of course I think this room is heaven. Great mix of pattern, shades of the same hue, texture etc. But with all the upholstered pieces, curtains and accessories in shades of red/pink, would you grow tired of the mix?

What do you think? Too much or just right? Would you feel different if it was shades of blue instead of red? Do you have any idea why the girls have two days off in the middle of October? Yeah, me neither.

  1. I love it and often take a similar approach to categorizing color. I think red is just full strength pink. I think if the room was in shades of blue it would have more mass appeal, but since when are we about mass appeal?

  2. This room is fabulous and I have to tell you I LOVE red as well. My last home had a lot of it and this current home has a lot of pink, so I feel ya!

  3. Fall break is the dumbest concept ever. We're almost to Thanksgiving, why not just extend that time off when people could actually do something useful with their time? Ugh. Sorry. This is a hot button of mine since we too are about to begin another Frozen marathon. We're going to embark on kleenex ghosts. I'll try to contain my excitement.

  4. i think as long as it's something you love, it ca't be too much of a good thing! it would be all blues or all grays and i would love it. if it were all yellows or greens, not so much, but other people would. :)

  5. Have fun with your girls. It's a bit too much for me...but still love it. It is a beautiful room.

  6. I'm in the minority here because I hate this. It looks like an overload of candy that's much too sweet to be good.

  7. I'd love it if it were a bit softer pink, and no matter what the color would want to change it up here and there! Have fun!

  8. I love it Elizabeth but would occasionally add a different color hue after a while. Good luck with the girls!

  9. I would love to visit a room like this in someone else's house but it would be too busy for me to live with day-in-day-out in my own home. Have fun with your girls today!

  10. I love this room in the photo, but I know I would quickly grow tired of it in my own home. Everything in moderation, right? ;)

  11. A little too much for me, but then I am the black, white, gold and silver gal!

  12. I kind of like it. I'm not sure I'd be able to live in it because I'm not a huge fan of warm colors like that in my space, but I'd be all over it in shades of blue or green.

  13. I love it! The color mix, patterns and textures. If I tried to pull this off it would be an epic fail. However, this room....I'm all over it. I do think having one room with heavy pattern and texture is enough. If it were all over the house like this, I might go crazy. I'd like it sprinkled throughout. Who knows? Maybe I am crazy!

  14. I think it's the pink couch that's putting me over the edge. Other than that, love it :)

  16. I love the image ... but it is a little too "sweet" for me! I am a huge RED fan Fall breaks are stupid. Just when we get our kids back in the routine, they are out again. Drives me nuts! Make certain to keep your coloring inside the lines!! xokim

  17. Teacher work days maybe re the reason for the girls being home. The room is great, just not my style. Enjoy coloring Elsa and your girls!

  20. You seriously remind me of me... I was reading this post, thinking you must see my updated dining room. I threw down a cowhide rug, and it is major sensory overload. I will tag you in IG. At any rate, then I get to the bottom... thinking why in the world are the children out of school! ... and they you are asking the same thing. Worth was out last week for TWO days in a row... Teacher work days. I swear the hourly rate for his preschool is $30 with all the days off he has!

  21. "Diet red". You're too funny, girl.

This room is a bit much for my taste. I like to use pinks and red much like I do wasabi...in small doses or it makes my eyes water.

  22. The color is very pretty, but there's too much room dandruff. All the "stuff" is really distracting.

  23. I really appreciate this room from a design perspective, but I don't want it in my house. :) I love how you asked if we would feel differently if it were blue - because I might feel completely different about it then! Now I want a group of rooms - everything about the rooms exactly the same, but in different hues. How awesome would that be to use as a tool to see what colors different people are drawn to?!

  24. I love pink and red...but I would have to tone it down with more white and creams. Have fun coloring!

  26. Since it's Mary, and I have a girl crush on her, I will give her a pass. I miss coloring with the kids. Fun!

  27. I adore Mary McDonald but I think there is just a tad too much red - you could introduce another color in the curtains and some of the accessories. I think its a beautiful room though. I'm starting to become more of a red fan.

  28. I personally everything that's going color wise in the room - it all feels so layered in a thoughtful way, for it to be in my own home the colors would have to change lol :)

  29. I think I accidentally deleted my first attempt at commenting. Hope you don't mind me saying, that I love the colours but think the room has other issues that are stopping it from working. It seems way too cluttered. If the pink curtains were replaced with fitted roman blinds, the room would straight away feel less fussy. The fireplace dominates the space and doesn't leave enough room between the mantle and the ceiling. The accessories are all competing with each other: candle sticks, lanterns, baskets, mirrors, cane chairs and those humungous table lamps! Eek! It looks like the owner wanted everything she loved to be in the one room, no matter what! I just want to get everything out on the lawn and start over. Sorry, rant over. Although I do love ranting about weird and arbitrary school holidays too. Why? Why?
